Prof. Dr. Markus Schwaiger

Prof. Dr. Mar­kus Schwai­ger is the Pre­si­dent of the Bava­ri­an Aca­de­my of Sci­en­ces and foun­ding direc­tor of Trans­la­TUM, the inter­di­sci­pli­na­ry cen­tral insti­tu­te for trans­la­tio­nal can­cer rese­arch at the TUM.

Prof. Schwei­ger was the Medi­cal Direc­tor and CEO at the Kli­ni­kum Rechts der Isar (hos­pi­tal) of the Tech­ni­cal Uni­ver­si­ty of Munich from 2016 until the end of June 2021. From 1993 to 2017, he was Direc­tor of the Depart­ment of Nuclear Medi­ci­ne.

His rese­arch focus is the use of mul­ti­mo­dal ima­ging in car­dio­lo­gy and onco­lo­gy to visua­li­ze and quan­ti­fy bio­lo­gi­cal pro­ces­ses. With his rese­arch, Prof. Schwai­ger has con­tri­bu­ted signi­fi­cant­ly to the estab­lish­ment of posi­tron emis­si­on tomo­gra­phy (PET) as a stan­dard pro­ce­du­re for the detec­tion of myo­car­di­al via­bi­li­ty.

He led the Col­la­bo­ra­ti­ve Rese­arch Cen­ter 824 fun­ded by the Ger­man Rese­arch Foun­da­ti­on, which aims to deve­lop methods for ima­ging tumor bio­lo­gy in order to sel­ect and moni­tor the­ra­py in pati­ents with can­cer.

Prof. Schwai­ger com­ple­ted his medi­cal stu­dies at the Freie Uni­ver­si­tät Ber­lin. His care­er as a phy­si­ci­an and rese­ar­cher has taken him, among others, to the UCLA School of Medi­ci­ne (Los Ange­les, USA) and the Uni­ver­si­ty of Michi­gan (Ann Arbor, USA), whe­re he was Pro­fes­sor of Nuclear Medi­ci­ne until 1993.
