Prof. Dr. Markus Schwaiger

Prof. Dr. Markus Schwaiger is the President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and founding director of TranslaTUM, the interdisciplinary central institute for translational cancer research at the TUM.
Prof. Schweiger was the Medical Director and CEO at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar (hospital) of the Technical University of Munich from 2016 until the end of June 2021. From 1993 to 2017, he was Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine.
His research focus is the use of multimodal imaging in cardiology and oncology to visualize and quantify biological processes. With his research, Prof. Schwaiger has contributed significantly to the establishment of positron emission tomography (PET) as a standard procedure for the detection of myocardial viability.
He led the Collaborative Research Center 824 funded by the German Research Foundation, which aims to develop methods for imaging tumor biology in order to select and monitor therapy in patients with cancer.
Prof. Schwaiger completed his medical studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. His career as a physician and researcher has taken him, among others, to the UCLA School of Medicine (Los Angeles, USA) and the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA), where he was Professor of Nuclear Medicine until 1993.
