Kutaisi International University (KIU), Georgia
In Kutaisi, the third largest city in Georgia, a young university is growing up with the aim of becoming a unique educational and research center in Georgia. Kutaisi International University (KIU) is guided by its role model, the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
TUM International has been advising KIU for several years on behalf of the Georgian government — among other things, in the conception of a business model, in the development of the educational programs and on the way to international accreditation. Like its role model TUM, the new university is to have a very entrepreneurial and application-oriented structure.
Strong ties with local, national and international companies are important, as are activities to strengthen the “entrepreneurial spirit” among students. Here, TUM International supports the establishment of a sustainably emerging and thus long-term growing Innovation Ecosystem with KIU as its core (e.g. as co-host of the successful KIUInnovate Business Forum in fall 2022).
The campus also offers a modern residence hall and a well-equipped teaching building to provide an inspiring environment for students. It will be further developed and expanded over the next few months. KIU is constantly working to provide a modern and broad-based education in line with Western standards of leading institutions.
Despite existing challenges, the first two academic years were successfully completed. The three bachelor’s degree programs offered in computer science, mathematics and management are to be expanded in 2023 to include two master’s programs and a doctoral program; additional degree programs in the natural and human sciences are to follow. KIU ’s guiding concept also includes internationalization and linking local and international talent. All study programs are therefore offered in English.
On the occasion of the official opening ceremony of KIU on October 21, 2020, here is a video message from Honorary President Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann.
