Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolf­gang A. Herr­mann is one of the most cited Ger­man che­mists (ISI) with over 800 sci­en­ti­fic publi­ca­ti­ons and about 80 patents. After stu­dy­ing che­mis­try at the Tech­ni­cal Uni­ver­si­ty of Munich (TUM), he ear­ned his doc­to­ra­te (1973) and habi­li­ta­ti­on (1978) in Regens­burg. A DFG fel­low­ship led him to Prof. P.S. Skell at PennSta­te, USA (1975/76). After an appoint­ment to a chair (Frank­furt, 1982), in 1985 he suc­cee­ded Nobel Pri­ze win­ner Prof. E.O. Fischer as head of the Inor­ga­nic Che­mis­try Insti­tu­te at the TUM.

Prof. Herr­mann has been award­ed 13 hono­ra­ry doc­to­ra­tes from dome­stic and for­eign uni­ver­si­ties and the hig­hest Ger­man sci­ence pri­zes; among others, the Leib­niz Pri­ze of the Ger­man Rese­arch Foun­da­ti­on (1987), the Max Planck Rese­arch Pri­ze (1991), and the Bava­ri­an Order of Maxi­mi­li­an for Sci­ence and Art (2012).

From 1995 to 2019, Prof. Herr­mann, as the 39th Pre­si­dent of TUM, shaped its struc­tu­ral trans­for­ma­ti­on into an entre­pre­neu­ri­al uni­ver­si­ty. In 2017–2019, he was also chair­man of the struc­tu­ral com­mis­si­on for Nurem­berg Uni­ver­si­ty of Tech­no­lo­gy.

Sin­ce 2019, Prof. Herr­mann has been acti­ve for TUM as Pre­si­dent Eme­ri­tus and in the same year beca­me Depu­ty Chair­man of the Skolk­o­vo Foun­da­ti­on Board of Direc­tors (Moscow) and Non-exe­cu­ti­ve Direc­tor of the TUM Asia Pte. Ltd., Sin­ga­po­re. He has also been Hono­ra­ry Pre­si­dent of Kutai­si Inter­na­tio­nal Uni­ver­si­ty (KIU) sin­ce Octo­ber 2020 and Hono­ra­ry Pre­si­dent of New Uzbe­ki­stan Uni­ver­si­ty (NUU) sin­ce July 2021. In addi­ti­on, he ser­ves on num­e­rous advi­so­ry boards of busi­ness enter­pri­ses and asso­cia­ti­ons.
